The Comrades Marathon

Only four days out from the 2012 Comrades Marathon. Here is some inspiration for those running and an explanation for those not. I’m not sure where this comes from but I thought I would share it with you:

It begins at the break of a new day, that one day each year, where a special band of people, that select few. Of every gender, every race, every creed, every age, from every walk of life, and from every corner of the earth, come together.

They are here to begin a journey, that, at its conclusion, no matter how far they have travelled, every single one will have been defined. Whether we finish the race or not, it is the fact that we stood shoulder to shoulder at the starting line, that makes us winners. True winners of this auspicious occasion.

There is not one, when the sun sets on that day, that will not stand tall. In amongst the fastest, and the slowest, can say with pride, that they took part in that day of days, the race of races….. The Comrades Marathon.

It is not just a race, it’s much more than a race, it is a mountain which every single participant will attempt to cross, to summit, or to conquer. It’s a life changing event, one in which everyone will dig deep into their human reserves, in order to overcome some of the biggest obstacles and challenges that each and everyone will ever face in their lives. And on that day, whether they are running against the clock, or running to their own beat, each one is a giant, giants among men.

This is more than merely a seething mass of humanity, who come together on that appointed day. This is 14000 champions, 14000 winners, 14000 heroes, each and everyone there to take part, and to realise everyone else’s dreams, aspirations, their hopes and their goals. All to become one with one another.

There are those who will make is laugh, those who will make us cry, and some that will make us blush, and so many that will make us proud. It is here we learn the meaning of heroism, the meaning of respect for each other, and the true understanding of sacrifice. We discover that to help a fellow athlete or friend, is indeed to help ourselves. Whilst kilometres fall away behind us, it is the road that lies ahead that makes us true to ourselves, and make us true individuals.

Everyone’s personal best is measured not in time, but in endurance, and also in the belief of ones own abilities, no matter how small or brave that individual might be. The ones that stand tall on that day are each and everyone. Those that end their race, whether is be in pain or glory, will carry those traits like medals forever. And to those who venture out on this occasion for the very first time, with a fleet or heavy footing, are to discover that this is not a race or a marathon, it is a journey, a journey of discovery. On in search of ones inner self. A day in your life you can proudly say, that you have taken part in one of the most gruelling challenges know to man. The Ultimate Human Race.

To the true Comrades, they will have found that all have become one and are revered by all. And that in its self is the miracle called the Comrades Marathon. The greatest ultra marathon event in the world.

Running Podcast – Episode 14

This time next week it is all over. We’re in the middle of Comrades week 2012 and there are tons of nervous runners around. Nervous of what is to come, nervous of what might happen, nervous of something going wrong before race day, just down right nervous. I thought on this week’s podcast I would focus on race day and managed to assemble a pretty impressive line-up (even if I say so myself!).  Between us there are 85 Comrades medals including 9 winners’ medals! Granted I only add 1 but it still sounds impressive.

This week I catch up with:

-          Dave Rogers who is the person with the most medals to his name. He has completed 44 and is aiming to complete his 45th this year.

-          Bruce Fordyce (9 time Comrades Marathon winner)

-          Lindsey Parry from the HPC in Pretoria, who a strong opinion about the use of pain killers on race day

-          Craig Fry from Craig Fry Management about who he reckons will win the race

-          Patrick Baransky who is the head of Sponsorship at Nedbank and in charge of running countrywide.

If you are running on Sunday, have a great one. Be safe and I hope you have the race of your life!

Running Podcast – Episode 12

There is less than 4 weeks to go to the 2012 Comrades Marathon and all the long training runs have been done. It’s now time to cut back on the long ones and sharpen the edge if you’d like as we head towards race day. On episode 12 of my running podcast I chat to Doctor Jeremy Boulter, who is the convenor of the Comrades medical panel and the Comrades doctor, I also wanted to chat to someone who is an ordinary, everyday runner who has a lot of Comrades experience to impart and that is exactly what Richard Wulfsohn has to offer. He will be running his 31st Comrades Marathon this and has some valuable information to share when it comes to the down run. We look at the trail running scene in Gauteng when we chat to Debbie Agenbag from Wildtrail (http://www.wildtrail.co.za). You can get hold of Debbie on the following email debbie@wildtrail.co.za

My Comrades Journey

One of the things I love about the Comrades Marathon are the stories. Everybody that has run it or even just been around it has a story to tell. Over the last year or so I have been lucky enough to speak around the country about my Comrades journey and so many people have shared their story with me. I have also been meaning to put together a short little video of my story for a while now but have just been busy.  Until now that is.

The reason I wanted to do this was in the build up to my first Comrades I spent hours on YouTube watching inspiring stories which helped me through my training and racing when things got difficult and I wanted to quit. I also know that my story is not unique; there are hundreds of stories just like mine, only better, which do the rounds at running clubs around the world. If this video inspires one person to turn things around in their life then I have achieved what I set out to achieve. Your goal may not be to run the Comrades Marathon or lose 50kgs like mine was. It may be to run a 5km fun run or lose 5kgs. I hope this video inspires you to make the changes needed to achieve that goal.

Another reason I love South Africa

I love South Africa. I really do. I love being a South African. I can’t imagine being any other nationality. One of the things I love most about this country is the spirit of its people. We just never seem to want to give up. It’s that never say die attitude that I love. If you actually sit down and think about what this country has gone through since 1990 it is amazing that there has not been major bloodshed. There are many countries on this planet that have gone through half of what we have and have imploded. But we have carried on regardless and made the best of the hand we have been dealt.

We also punch above our weight limit in a big way. We believe we can chew whatever we bite off. We just do. I love that. Our sporting culture screams that. In particular South Africa’s ultra distance running culture says tons about us as a nation. Go to any other country and mention that you are running or have run a marathon (42.2km or 26 miles) and they treat you like you are an absolute rock star! And you should be treated like that. A marathon IS a big deal. It’s a hell of a long way to run in one go but more than that it takes some serious commitment and dedication to train for the actual event. Tell a South African you’re running a marathon and no one bats an eyelid.

What really got me thinking about this was all the running Read more…
