This Weeks Training

It has been an interesting week as far as my training has gone. I did the mileage I wanted to. Nothing major yet, I’m laying the foundation for the increase that is coming my way.  I’ve been following the novice program on runnersworld and focusing more on the amount of time I spend on the road than the actual kilometers. This week I did 5km’s on Monday, 6km’s on Wednesday, 7.5 on Friday and then another 5 yesterday. I’m a bit sore (my feet in particular) but I’m resting as hard as I can today. I was quite excited that, according to the training programme, I only have to run 4 times a week. That all changed on Thursday night!

The Comrades Marathon Association is currently putting on a road show with talks by Ian Laxton on the history of the race and Lindsey Parry, who is the official Comrades coach, who spoke on training and injury prevention. I went to the talk at my local running club on Thursday. It was very informative but I realised three things from Lindsey’s talk. Firstly, we went to primary school together. Secondly and probably more importantly, I am going to have to run a half marathon before the end of the year. The last one for 2009 is the Ekurhuleni Half Marathon in Katlehong on the 6 December 2009. I did the sums today; there are only eight weeks to go. No pressure. I also realised that I am going to have to up my training by an extra day or two a week. Lindsey reckons the four day a week plan is the bare minimum.

The last thing I realised was that I am going to really, REALLY need do something about this Backstreet Boy I’m carrying around. The genius in me tells me that it is going to be a tad easier to run if I’m about 40kg’s lighter than I am now. Running shoes were also spoken about. The heavier you are the faster you go through shoes. I did the calculations, by Comrades 2010 I am going to be broke if I go through shoes like I should to avoid injuries. So I have two options, dispose of the boy band member or get a shoe sponsor. I think a combination of the two would be ideal. I’m the only one who can do anything about the weight, but as far as the shoes go, any offers?
